During the 2015 UK General Election campaign, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) “challenged some of the toxic discourse around immigration” through their I Am An Immigrant website and posters.
They plan to launch a follow-up I Am A Refugee campaign on World Refugee Day (20 June) and are seeking crowdfunding to finance the production of 50 physical blue plaques to recognise the achievements and contributions of refugees who have come to the UK.
We will work with some primary ambassadors, including Rita Ora, who have come to the UK as refugees and have achieved exceptional success. Their achievements will be recognised by plaques on buildings where they have lived or worked.
The physical plaques will be enhanced by a website allowing all refugees to create their own digital plaques to print and share and giving more information.
As part of Refugee Week 2016 at least 50 other refugees will be invited to create their plaques and all plaques will be displayed in an art exhibition during the course of the week.
